Dalton Police Officer Resigns After Controversial Arrest of College Student Leading to ICE Detention

A Dalton police officer, Leslie O’Neal, has resigned following the arrest of college student Ximena Arias-Cristobal, who was detained for two weeks by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after being pulled over on May 5 for a mistaken traffic violation. Arias-Cristobal, a 19-year-old who has lived in the U.S. since she was four, was ineligible for the DACA program and her family has been living in Georgia without legal status since 2010. Although the U.S. government is pursuing her deportation, officials have stated she can remain at home with her family for now.
