The city of Decatur, in collaboration with the Georgia Historic Preservation Division and Wellroot Family Services, is investigating a potential burial vault discovered in Legacy Park, the former site of an orphanage established in 1873. Construction workers found a brick vault measuring 2 feet by 4 feet by 2 feet while grading for a multiuse path, prompting an immediate halt to work and a report to the Decatur Police Department. City officials are awaiting results from a ground-penetrating radar scan to determine if any human remains are present, with plans to prioritize dignity and respect for any identified cemetery.
