Fulton County Sheriff Launches Drone Security System to Combat Jail Contraband
  • Share on:

Sheriff Patrick Labat of Fulton County has revealed a new drone security system aimed at combating the influx of contraband into the county jail. He noted that up to 75% of attempts to smuggle items into the jail involve drones, particularly due to improvements in entrance security screening. Labat mentioned that there have been nights with up to eight unauthorized drones flying around the jail perimeter. The drone system is designed to respond quickly to security breaches, acting as the sheriff's eyes in the sky. This initiative comes amid ongoing issues with chronic understaffing at the jail, which has led to safety risks for both inmates and staff. A federal monitor previously reported that inmates have been receiving drugs and weapons via drones, often undetected. The sheriff's office has partnered with Atlanta-based Flock Safety, training deputies to operate the drones. Labat envisions a future where additional drones can be deployed throughout the county for various law enforcement tasks. Fulton County commissioners recently approved measures to address jail overcrowding, emphasizing the need for better staffing to ensure safety. The new drone technology, which includes video and audio capabilities, is expected to enhance monitoring and response to incidents within the jail. Labat emphasized that this initiative is funded by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Foundation and is not reliant on taxpayer dollars.
