Surge in ICE Detainer Requests Sparks Concerns Among Atlanta Immigrant Communities

Jails in metro Atlanta are increasingly detaining foreign-born inmates for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with Gwinnett County leading the trend. From April to June 2025, Gwinnett received 218 ICE detainer requests, a significant rise from fewer than half during the last three months of 2024, while DeKalb County saw an increase from 32 to 190 requests in the same timeframe. This surge follows a Georgia law requiring sheriffs to verify the immigration status of booked individuals, raising concerns among community leaders about the impact on trust between immigrant communities and local law enforcement.
