Two people died in a small plane crash shortly after takeoff on Saturday night in Newton County. Police responded to Covington Municipal Airport around 11:20 p.m. after the Federal Aviation Administration reported the single-engine Rockwell Commander plane had lost communication approximately 20 minutes into the flight. The aircraft was later found in the woods north of the runway, with the victims pronounced dead at the scene; the incident is under investigation by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.
