Westside Residents Rally Against Georgia Power Substation in Historic Vine City Neighborhood

Dozens of Westside residents gathered at the Lindsay Street Baptist Church for an emergency town hall meeting to oppose Georgia Power's plan to build a new substation in the historic Vine City neighborhood, which they claim represents environmental injustice. Community leaders, including Shade’ Yvonne Jones and Atlanta City Council members, voiced concerns about the project's impact on the neighborhood's aesthetics and public health, particularly given its proximity to Bethune Elementary School. Georgia Power has stated that the substation is necessary to support energy demands from the nearby Centennial Yards redevelopment and plans to engage with residents, but many feel their voices have not been adequately considered in the decision-making process.
