Atlanta Journalist Faces New Criminal Charges Amid Immigration Custody Battle

On Thursday, Mario Guevara, an influential Spanish-language reporter in metro Atlanta, was hit with new criminal charges while in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Folkston ICE Processing Center in South Georgia. The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office filed three misdemeanor charges against him for distracted driving, failure to obey a traffic control device, and reckless driving, which are unrelated to his recent arrest during a protest in DeKalb County. Guevara, who has work authorization and a potential path to a green card, is facing challenges in his immigration case, particularly following a previous asylum denial in 2012.
