Atlanta police shoot man armed with knife after violent altercation in Buckhead
On Tuesday, Atlanta police shot a 59-year-old man armed with a knife during an incident on Lenox Road in Buckhead. The situation began around 2 p.m. when a woman called 911 after an altercation with the man, whom she had recently met. Police responded to the scene where they encountered the man in the road, armed and behaving violently. According to Atlanta police Major Peter Malecki, officers issued multiple commands for him to drop the knife, but he refused. They attempted to use less lethal options, which were unsuccessful. At one point, the man lunged at an officer with the knife, prompting the officer to fire their weapon, striking the man twice. Sean Tackett, a nearby resident, reported hearing two gunshots and noted the neighborhood was generally considered safe. Following the shooting, police rendered aid to the man, who was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to investigate the incident. Parts of Lenox Road were closed for several hours as authorities processed the scene.
