Mayor Kelvin Owens of Camilla is currently in jail facing charges of election interference after allegedly blocking voters from participating in a special election scheduled for November 5, 2024. Along with former election officials Rhunette Williford and Cheryl Ford, Owens is accused of instructing police to prevent access to polling places and improperly canceling the election, which was already contentious due to earlier legal disputes regarding candidate qualifications. All three individuals were indicted by a Mitchell County grand jury and are awaiting a bond hearing on Monday.
