Residents in Habersham County were evacuated after an antique cannonball was discovered in a garage on Tuesday, prompting authorities to close a section of Wheeler Road near Garrett Road and Ga. 115. The evacuation lasted approximately five hours while GBI bomb technicians worked to safely move the cannonball for detonation, following concerns that it might contain hazardous black powder. This incident echoes previous discoveries of unexploded ordnance in the area, including a Civil War shell found at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield and another cannonball unearthed during construction in Atlanta.
