A federal judge has appointed Kathleen Kenney as a monitor to oversee improvements at the Fulton County Jail, following a deal between the county and the U.S. Department of Justice to address serious safety and health issues. Kenney, who has over 32 years of corrections experience, will ensure compliance with a series of requirements aimed at protecting inmates and maintaining facility security, issuing public reports on progress every six months. The appointment comes after a DOJ investigation highlighted "abhorrent" conditions at the jail, including incidents of violence and neglect, particularly following the death of inmate Lashawn Thompson in 2023.
