Murder Suspect Dead After Standoff with Police in Stockbridge Neighborhood Following Officer Shooting

A murder suspect, Derrick Rankin, 33, is dead following a standoff with law enforcement in Stockbridge after he allegedly shot an Atlanta Police Department officer during an attempted arrest on October 3, 2023. The officer, who is expected to recover from a gunshot wound to the arm, was part of a fugitive task force investigating Rankin for the murder of Courtney Reese in southeast Atlanta on August 20. After shooting at officers, Rankin barricaded himself in a home and was later found dead in the attic with a gunshot wound and a rifle in his possession.
