On Thursday afternoon, reports of a fireball streaking across the southeastern U.S. inundated social media, with the American Meteor Society receiving around 100 sightings from Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee. The National Weather Service indicated that satellite-based lightning detection captured a streak in the sky near the North Carolina and Virginia border, and many Georgians reported seeing the fireball followed by a loud boom.
