On Monday, Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts proposed a new mental and medical health facility at the county jail, following multiple lawsuits alleging dangerous conditions for inmates. The facility aims to accommodate up to 1,800 inmates with special needs and is estimated to cost around $1.1 billion, coinciding with ongoing complaints about violence and inadequate safety measures within the Rice Street facility. Four recent lawsuits detail incidents of stabbings and assert that jail staff displayed "malicious and reckless indifference" toward inmate safety, highlighting the urgent need for reform in the management of the jail.
