Georgia Supreme Court to Hear Appeal on Controversial Confederate Monument Removal in Lawrenceville

The Georgia division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, along with its Lawrenceville chapter and two Gwinnett County men, has appealed to the Georgia Supreme Court regarding the removal of a Confederate monument from downtown Lawrenceville. This appeal follows a ruling by the Georgia Court of Appeals that Gwinnett County has sovereign immunity against lawsuits related to the monument's removal, which the organization contests based on state law protecting such monuments. The county removed the monument in February 2021 due to repeated vandalism and has since offered to transfer it to a Confederate cemetery, an offer that the Sons of Confederate Veterans rejected, claiming it would violate state law.
