South Fulton officer arrested for sexual misconduct while on duty
A South Fulton police officer, Micheal Shealey Cockran, has been accused of engaging in a sexual encounter with an arrestee while on duty. The incident occurred on Saturday after Cockran responded to a gas station on Spence Road following a 911 call. An arrest warrant indicates that Cockran found a woman in a vehicle matching the description from the call. Instead of taking her directly to jail, he allegedly drove her to a different location where she reported being forced to perform sexual acts. The woman later revealed to detention staff at the DeKalb jail that she had been sexually assaulted during her transport. Cockran, 30, was arrested on Wednesday and has since been terminated from the South Fulton police department. He faces charges of improper sexual contact by an employee and violation of oath by a public officer. Interim Public Safety Director Cedric Alexander emphasized that consent is irrelevant in this case, stating that Cockran violated Georgia State law by abusing his position. Investigators found that Cockran's body camera footage was not recording during a critical part of the incident. Tracking data from his patrol vehicle indicated he parked in a secluded area during the encounter. Cockran initially denied any misconduct but later admitted to some involvement after being confronted with video evidence.
