Jerry Dunaway, a 74-year-old U.S. Navy veteran from northeast Gwinnett County, lost $802,000 to a cryptocurrency scam after being lured by a person named Sophei Van Buren through WhatsApp. Despite initially seeing gains from his investments, Dunaway discovered that his funds were no longer accessible when he attempted to withdraw money, prompting him to report the incident to police. The Gwinnett police are investigating the case, with charges against Van Buren pending, while the Dunaway family has started a GoFundMe to help recover their losses and support other victims of similar scams.
