Children Rescued After Being Trapped in Elevator for Three Hours

On November 11, two children became trapped in an elevator at the Ascent Peachtree complex in Atlanta while trying to grab food. The children, Johnny Jones and his 11-year-old cousin Malai Moore, managed to contact their mother, Jasmine Thomas, who heard them screaming for help. Atlanta firefighters from Station 11 responded to the emergency, but initial attempts to reset the elevator system were unsuccessful. Battalion Chief Lem Mullins reported that firefighters had to rappel more than 50 feet down the elevator shaft using a specialized rescue kit. After being trapped for approximately three hours, the children were finally rescued by firefighter Tyler Ross, who secured them in a harness before lifting them to safety. Jones expressed feelings of relief upon seeing Ross and described the experience as nerve-wracking yet manageable. The entire rescue operation lasted about 15 to 20 minutes, and no injuries were reported. Following their rescue, the children reunited with their rescuers at the fire station, where they were gifted clothes and a department patch. The elevator malfunction was attributed to a brief outage, and the Ascent Peachtree management confirmed that the equipment was inspected and found to be operating normally afterward.
